When I think about Heart Inspired Cooking, a few key elements come to mind: joy, fun, experimentation, colour, passion, love, and a freedom from rigid rules. It’s a cooking philosophy that celebrates creativity and personal expression, allowing each meal to reflect not just our tastes but our very essence.
Where My Passion for Food Began
My love for food has deep roots, tracing back to my early years at the ONTOS health retreat where my mother and I lived. Surrounded by nature and removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, I learned to cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients straight from our garden. This formative experience ignited my passion for food and taught me the value of simple, wholesome cooking.
What Inspires My Cooking
Inspiration for my cooking comes from a rich tapestry of experiences. My travels have introduced me to diverse cuisines and culinary traditions, while interactions with people—whether customers, friends, or fellow cooks—constantly fuel my creativity. I draw inspiration from vivid pictures, cherished memories, fresh produce, new ingredients, and the unique flavours of farmers' markets. The smells of different ingredients, the challenge of emptying my fridge, and the thrill of using up bountiful produce also play a significant role in shaping my culinary creations. Watching others cook, with their varied techniques and approaches, further enriches my cooking journey.
My Food Philosophy
My food philosophy revolves around several core beliefs:
-
We Are All Individuals: Each of us has unique tastes, dietary needs, and preferences. Embracing this individuality is crucial to finding joy in cooking and eating.
-
Drop the Fads, Rules, and Labels: Let go of the latest trends and dietary restrictions that don’t resonate with you. Instead, focus on what truly brings you satisfaction and nourishment.
-
Find Joy in Cooking: Cooking should be a joyful experience, not a chore. Approach it with enthusiasm and creativity, and let that joy infuse your meals.
-
Cook with Your Eyes and Your Heart: Pay attention to the visual and emotional aspects of cooking. Use your senses and intuition to guide you in creating dishes that are both beautiful and delicious.
-
Be Creative: Experiment with new ingredients, flavours, and techniques. Creativity in the kitchen not only makes cooking more enjoyable but also leads to exciting and memorable meals.
-
Quality Matters: Opt for organic, local, and natural ingredients whenever possible. The quality of your ingredients directly impacts the flavour and nutrition of your meals.
-
Educate Yourself: The culinary world is vast and ever-evolving. Keep learning and exploring to stay inspired and informed.
-
Food is Energy and Life: Food fuels our bodies and souls. It’s not just about sustenance but also about the energy and vitality it brings into our lives.
-
What’s True Today May Not Be True Tomorrow: Be open to change and new information. What works for you now might evolve, and that’s part of the journey.
I believe that by tuning into ourselves and taking care of our well-being, we become the best judges of what is right for us. Each of us has the gift to create Heart Inspired delicious food that nourishes and delights.
So, embrace your creativity, trust your instincts, and let the joy of cooking guide you. With every meal, you have the opportunity to infuse a little bit of heart and magic into your life.
